Sonya Moss was born on March 16, 1971, in Cincinnati, Ohio. She departed this life on June 29, 2026, at 6.01am leaving behind a legacy of strength, service, and unwavering love for her family. As a child, Sonya was baptized at Springfield Baptist Church in Hawkinsville, Georgia, where her faith journey began. A proud member of the Class of 1989, Sonya was active throughout high school, where she played basketball and proudly performed as a clarinet player in the marching band all four years. She also enjoyed playing baseball and kickball, loved roller skating, and was an avid reader. Her determination and discipline led her to earn a Black Belt in karate. Following high school, she attended Clayton State College. In 1996, Sonya answered the call to serve her country by enlisting in the United States Navy. She was immensely proud of her military service and considered it one of the greatest honors of her life. She served honorably for 20 years before retiring in 2016. The values she lived by—accountability, respect, integrity, and a strong work ethic—were evident throughout her military career and remained with her throughout her life. Sonya was married in 1996 and that marriage ended in divorce 2017. After retiring from the Navy, Sonya continued her professional career as an Account Manager with Allied Universal Security Services. She was highly respected and genuinely loved by her coworkers, who admired her professionalism, leadership, and dedication. Above all else, Sonya treasured her family. She shared a special bond with her beloved godson, Martez Moss, whom she lovingly raised. She was known for expecting the best from those she loved, encouraging accountability, showing respect to others, and leading by example. Sonya leaves to cherish her memory her loving mother, Mary Lou Wright-Austin; her father, Odell Holmes; her siblings, Jerry Lee Austin, Demetrius Varnard Austin, Dominque Jackson, Alberta Holmes, and Matthew Holmes; her beloved godson, Martez Moss; her nieces, Maria Olivia Taverniti-Austin, Jhikhira LeAnna Austin, Jheriah LeShaun Austin, and Jherra Leigh Austin; her nephews, Brian Dyson and Demetrius Austin; her uncles, Moses Wright, Bobby Wright, Curtis Holmes, Robert Holmes, and Charles Holmes; her aunts, Sallie Rea Richardson and Marjorie Kinchens; her beloved special cousins, Laura Judy Coleman-Davis, Tanja Wright, DeAngelo Wright, Michelle Holmes, Mark Holmes, Curtis Von Holmes, Katrina Holmes-Henderson, and Laurelle Holmes Smith; and a beloved best friend Lisa Harris and hair stylist she adored Spooda and a fly nail tech that became a friend and skating partner KiKi and host of additional cousins, extended family members, friends, and coworkers who will forever cherish her memory. She was preceded in death by her grandmother who lovingly raised her, Ella Mae Wright; her paternal grandparents, Odell and Sallie Lois Holmes; her sister, Misty Ward; her aunt, Mary Helen Holmes, Christine Wright and her uncles, R.C. Holmes, Eull Holmes, and Joe Holmes. Sonya’s life was defined by faith, service, strength, discipline, and love. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
