He was the first son born to the late Clifton Waverly Hardy and Marie Butcher Hardy. Wallace was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Jean Scott and two brothers, Clifton Hardy Jr. and Rudolph Hardy. At an early age, Wallace joined the Cool Springs Baptist Church in Gaston, N.C., where he committed his life to Christ. He received his formal education through the Northampton County school system in Gaston, North Carolina. After graduating from Gaston High School in 1969, Wallace moved to Washington D.C., in search of a new opportunity to advance. Although Wallace became very home sick and wanted to return to North Carolina, he persevered and remained in D.C. While working at Providence Hospital he met the love of his life, his future wife and forever soulmate Miriam Jenkins. Wallace and Miriam united in holy matrimony on December 2, 1972. Their union produced three children: Torrie, Tashéda, and Taurin. In 1972, Wallace began his federal career at the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Bureau of Engraving & Printing. At the Bureau, Wallace worked extensively in the Currency Manufacturing and U.S. Postage Stamp Program playing a vital role in the production of U.S. paper currency and U.S. postage stamps. His hard work was a true statement of devotion and dedication to public service, the Bureau, and our country. Wallace absolutely loved his career and the countless people that he worked alongside, affectionally known as his Bureau family. Wallace retired from his position as a Bookbinder in 2010, dedicating 38 years of federal service. Wallace was a dedicated and faithful member of Union Temple Baptist Church in Washington D.C., joining in 1973. As a man of God, Wallace was reliable and faithful placing God first in everything he did. Since 1976, Wallace served on the Union Temple Baptist Church Deacon Board, acting several years as Deacon Board Chairman. In addition, he sang in the Men’s Choir and worked directly with the UTBC Drill Team. In later years, he served on the Deacon Board at the Eastern Community Church in Landover, MD, and along with his wife Miriam organized and served as the church Marriage Ministry Leaders. Wallace and Miriam relocated to McDonough, Georgia in 2011 after their retirement to be closer to their two grandchildren Taryn & Torrie Jr. He was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2012 and although it limited his ability to do many things, he was still a husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, friend, jack-of-all-trades and a giant of a man in everything. “The chief” as he was called by some friends, he was never afraid of trying his hands at something. If he didn’t know how to do something he read books, watched videos, or connected with the right person and asked as many questions as he could. He loved using his hands and challenging his mind to finish off basements in two of his homes to perfection, once saying “I never want anything to beat me!” Wallace loved taking his family on vacations (especially cruises). He also enjoyed fishing in the Chesapeake Bay and working in his yard. One of his biggest delights was playing checkers with his grandson. Wallace lived and acted in nothing but love. His strong, dependable, and kind spirit was felt by all who he encountered. He believed the most important group of people in life was his family. He worked long hours to afford them a better life than where he came from. He always remained committed to spending quality time together with his family. He enjoyed taking his children to basketball games, cheerleading practice, martial arts, modeling/fashion shows, family vacations and reunions to name a few. Wallace did all of this while working a full-time job and attending night school, graduating as a certified professional in Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC), at Lincoln Technical Institute in 1982. He used his HVAC training to help those in need, often delivering his services free of charge to family, church members, the elderly, and those in need. To further achieve his goals, Wallace attended the University of the District of Columbia and Prince Georges Community College taking credit courses that ultimately supported his career path. Because of his love for God, his family and friends Wallace became the living definition of a true husband, father, and friend. He did not find it hard to lead his family and others to God because that was where his journey was leading him. He was anchored in his God given purpose, so he was able to give direction to others in their tough times. His favorite scripture, Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Wallace will be missed for his words of wisdom, but we know that his spirit will still be here guiding us on our journey. Wallace leaves to mourn, but we will always remember his love, care and devotion to his wife, Rev. Miriam J. Hardy, their three children: Torrie Wallace Hardy Sr. of McDonough, GA, Tashéda Elizabeth Hardy of Laurel, MD., Taurin Wallace Hardy (Jamie) of Memphis, TN, two grandchildren – Taryn Imani McDuffie of Fairfax, VA, Torrie Wallace Hardy Jr. of Locust Grove, GA., one brother: Sylvester Hardy of Gaston, NC, two aunts: Sadie Risby (Clif) of Fort Washington, MD, Cornelia Hardy of Pleasant Hill, NC, two sisters-in-law: Joyce Jenkins Stewart of Baltimore, MD., Carolyn Jenkins of Washington, D.C., one brother-in-law: Jerome Jenkins (Linda) of District Heights, MD., a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
